Indian Navy – A Fabulous Career to Explore

India occupies vital geo-strategic position in the Indian ocean. Indian Navy safeguards the country’s maritime sovereignty. It plays four roles: military, diplomatic, constabulary and benign. Navy’s military role includes deterrence and dissuasion against any intervention or act harming the national interests.

A career in Indian Navy has the capability to inflict a crushing defeat on the adversary in the event of hotilities. It ensures our coastal security. It’s a multi-dimensional and networked force that maintains high level of readiness at all times in order to defeat all maritime threats. Indian Navy offers excellent career opportunities in various branches to eligible young men and women to serve the force.

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

The path to Command is through the Executive Branch. Only sea going officers of the Executive Branch can exercise command of the Ships, Submarines and Aircraft. Naval

aircraft locate and attack enemy surface and submarines and take part in amphibious warfare, search and rescue, casualty evacuation etc. The major responsibility of the Navy in peace time is to train for war as effectively as possible in the knowledge and this will contribute to its prevention.

Executive Branch officers can specialise in (a) Gunnery & Missiles (b) Anti – Submarine Warfare (c) Navigation and direction (d) Communications (e) Aviation (f) Submarine (g) Hydrography (h) Diving. Other cadres that form part of the Executive Branch are – Law, Air Traffic Control, Naval Armament Inspection and Logistics.

INDIAN NAVY ENGINEERING BRANCH

Modern ships, submarines and aircraft with advanced technology, machinery and propulsion systems. The Engineer Officer is responsible for keeping all these systems serviceable. Opportunities to work in shore jobs in Naval Dockyards and indigenous production units also exist. In no other career is an engineer exposed to such a wide spectrum of opportunities for keeping abreast of modern developments. Naval Architects specialise in warship construction.

The Indian Navy today employs the largest pool of trained Naval Architects in India. A Naval Architect is involved in design, construction, quality control, repair and new construction work of naval vessels.

INDIAN NAVY ELECTRICAL BRANCH

A warship is a mini floating city with an integral power generation and distribution system. In addition, complex missile systems, underwater weapons, radar and radio communication equipment form part of a warship’s equipment. A majority of these are either computer based or computer aided and incorporate the latest trends in electronics engineering. For a ship to be able to fight effectively, all this equipment must be kept working at peak efficiency.

INDIAN NAVY EDUCATION BRANCH

Officers of the Education Branch play a major role in the training of a Naval Officer/Sailor and are responsible for scientific and methodical instructions including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the Navy and general education. They can specialise in  Oceanography and Meteorology  and also in some of the specialisations of the Executive Branch.

WOMEN IN INDIAN NAVY

A career in the Navy offers women too equal opportunities and challenges. They are storming male bastions everywhere and the Defence services are no exception. Women too can learn new skills and acquire unrivalled experience. A Women is eligible to apply for Short Service Commission in LAW, Logistics, ATC, Observer, Education, Naval Architecture, Pilot and NAI entries. Hi-tech war machines have awesome firepower, state-of-the-art weapon control system, computer controlled machinery and a high standard of habitability.

 (c) Branch/ Type of Entry– Cadet Entry NDA/ NDA (NA) (UPSC), Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 161/2 – 19,Educational Qualifications- 12th Passed/ Appearing in 12th standard with PCM.

(d)Branch/ Type of Entry– Cadet Entry NDA/ NDA (NA) (UPSC), Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 161/2 – 19, Educational Qualifications- 12th Passed/ Appearing in 12th standard with PCM.

(e)Branch/ Type of Entry– Naval Armament Inspection Cadre, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 19 `/2 – 25,Educational Qualifications- Final year/ Qualified B.E/ B.Tech in Electrical/ Electronics/ Mechanical/ Production /Instrumentation/ IT/ Chemical/ Metallurgy and Aerospace Engineering.

(f) Branch/ Type of Entry–Law, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 22 – 27, Educational Qualifications-Candidates should possess degree in Law qualifying them for enrolment as Advocate under the Advocates Act 1961.

(g) Branch/ Type of Entry– Logistics/ Works/ Catering, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 191/2 – 25,Educational Qualifications- For Logistics cadre – (i) B Tech/ BE (Any Discipline) with first class. (ii) MBA with first class. (iii) B.SC/ B.COM/ B.Sc (IT) with first class along with PG diploma in Finance/ Logistics/ Supply Chain Management/ Material Management (iv) MCA/ Msc (IT) with first class.       

For Works – (v) BE/ B Tech (Civil Engineering) /B.Architect. For Catering – (vi) MSc (Hotel Management)/ MBA (Hotel Management)/ BSc or BA with first class along with PG Diploma in Hotel Management

(h) Branch/ Type of Entry– Musician, Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 21-25

(i)Branch/ Type of Entry– University Entry Scheme {GS(X)}, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 19 – 24,Educational Qualifications- A Bachelor’s Degree from recognized university (relaxed to higher secondary for applicant having exceptional professional ability in music).

Professional Qualification  Ability to play competently at least one military band musical instrument, in addition to the Piano – Forte. Should possess one of the following Diplomas or equivalent:- LRAM/ ARCM/ ATCL Preferable:- Experience as a conductor of an Orchestra/ Band or as a teacher of music.

(j)Branch/ Type of Entry– General Service (Executive), Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)-191/2 – 25,Educational Qualifications- Final year/ Qualified BE/B Tech (Any discipline).

(v)Branch/ Type of Entry– Info Tech, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 191/2 – 25, Educational Qualifications- Final year/ Qualified BE/B Tech with 60% marks in Computer Science/ Computer Engg / IT/ BSc (IT)/ M Tech (Computer science)/ MSc (Computer)/ BCA/ MCA.

(w) Branch/ Type of Entry– Sports, Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 191/2 – 25, Educational Qualifications – Regular Post Graduate Degree or BE/ B.Tech degree in any field. Candidates with diploma in Sports Coaching from National Institute of Sports and M Sc in Sports (Coaching) will be given priority for short listing. Hence sports qualification are for Sports other than Yachting/ Wind Surfing.

A candidate should have participated in Senior National Championship/ Games in Athletics / Cross Country/ Triathlon/ Badminton/ Tennis/ Squash/ Football/ Handball/ Hockey/ Basketball/ Volleyball/ Cricket/ Swimming/ Diving/ Water Polo/ Kabaddi/ Boxing.

Age Limit (years)- 21 – 25, Educational Qualifications-Sports Qualification (Yachting/ Wind Surfing) – Must have at least one of following qualifications :-(a) Should have participated in Senior National Championship conducted by YAI and secured a minimum of 5th position in an Olympic class. (b) Should have attained a position amongst the top 50% of the fleet in a class of boat/ wind surf completed at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships (c) Should have represented India at the Asian Games or ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships and secured a medal in Youth/ Olympic Class.

(x)Branch/ Type of Entry– UES (IT), Unmarried Men / Women- Men, Age Limit (years)- 22 – 27, Educational Qualifications- Final year/ BE/B Tech with 60% marks in Computer Science Engg./ Computer Engg./ IT.

Education Branch Permanent Commission, Unmarried Men / Women-Men, Age Limit (years)-21 – 25, Educational Qualifications-A Master Degree (min 50% marks in ) (a) MSc Physics (with Maths in Bsc) (b) MSc Maths (with Physics in Bsc) (c) Permanent Commission MSc Chemistry (with Physics in Bsc) (d) Master’s degree in English (with physics or mathematics at intermediate or equivalent standard). (e) Master’s degree in computer application or computer science. Candidate should have studied either Physics or Mathematics at their graduation level. (f) Else BE/ B.Tech in any of the following discipline :- Mechanical Engg./ Electrical Engg./ Engg. in Computer Science/ Technology/ A post graduate degree of a recognized university in Humanities (Economics/ History/ Political Science).

(b) Cadet Entry NDA/ NA (UPSC), Unmarried Men / Women-Men, Age Limit (years)- 16 1/2 -19, Educational Qualifications-12th Passed/ Appearing in 12th standard with PCM.

Short Service Commission

(a) General Service, Unmarried Men / Women-Men, Age Limit (years)-19 1/2- 25, Educational Qualifications-     Final year/ Qualified BE/B Tech with 60% marks in Electrical/ Electronics/ Telecommunication/ any other allied discipline.

(b) Submarine, Unmarried Men / Women-   Men, Age Limit (years)-   19 1/2  – 25, Educational Qualifications-Final year/Qualified BE/B Tech with 55% marks in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Computer Science/ Control Engg. or any other allied discipline or equivalent qualification recognized by institute of engineers (India) as exempted from section ‘A’ and ‘B’ of their associate membership examination

Note:

(a) The initial engagement period for various SSC entries are as follows:-
(i) Executive (Pilot/Observer/Submarine/Hydro) and Tech (Submarine) – 14 years with no further extension.
(ii)Executive (GS/IT/NAIC/Logistics),Tech (GS/Aviation/NA) and Education -12 years extendable to 14 years.
(iii)Executive (Sports/ATC/Law) – 10 years extendable to 14 years in 02 steps ie; 10+2 + 2
(b) Women are eligible to apply for Short Service Commission in Law, Logistics, ATC, Observer, Education, Naval Architecture, Pilot and NAI.
(c) Advertisements calling for applications from eligible candidates are published in Employment News and important newspapers in Feb to May and Aug to Dec every year.
(d) The training of officers selected through the above entries normally commences in the month of July/ Jan every year.

Entry -ARTIFICER Artificer Apprentice, Branch Specialisation- Electrical/Mech/Hull Artificer Air Mechanician, Age-17-20, Educational Qualification- 10+2 equivalent, qualified with Physics & Mathematics and one subject out of Chemistry/ Biology/ Computers with minimum 60% marks.

Method of Recruitment- Through written examination in English, Dec & Jun   GK, Maths and Science held at NRCs/ AROs/ ASCs/ NREs twice a year in Mar/Apr & Sep/Oct for the course commencing in Aug & Feb respectively., Month of  Advt. –Dec & Jun 

 Entry-NON ARTIFICER SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit), Branch Specialisation- Seaman/Communication/ Electrical/ Medical/ Logistics (Material)/ Logistics (Financial & Administration)/ Engineering/Naval Aviation., Age-17-21, Educational Qualification-  10+2 or equivalent, qualified with Physics & Mathematics and one subject out of Chemistry/ Biology/Computer Science

Method of Recruitment- Through written examination in English, GK, Maths and Science held at NRCs / & AROs/ ASCs/ NREs twice a year in Mar/Apr & Sep/Oct for the course commencing in Aug &Feb respectively., Month of  Advt. – Nov/Dec & May/Jun
